Benedict Arnold's Early Life and Military Career
Benedict Arnold was born in Norwich, Connecticut, on January 14, 1741. He became a merchant and shipmaster before joining the Continental Army at the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War.
Arnold quickly distinguished himself as a brave and skilled military officer. He played a major role in several important battles, including the Battle of Saratoga in 1777.
Arnold's Betrayal
In 1779, Arnold began secret negotiations with the British. He was motivated by a combination of personal grievances and financial hardship. On September 21, 1780, Arnold met with British Major John André to finalize the terms of his betrayal.
Arnold agreed to surrender the American fort at West Point to the British. However, his plans were foiled when André was captured and hanged as a spy. Arnold himself escaped to England, where he lived for the rest of his life.
