The Last King of France
Louis XVI, born on August 23, 1754, ascended to the throne of France in 1774. Unbeknownst to him, his reign would be marked by turbulence and ultimately lead to the end of the monarchy in France.
The French Revolution
The seeds of the French Revolution were sown during Louis XVI's rule. Economic inequality, social unrest, and Enlightenment ideas fueled a growing dissatisfaction with the monarchy. In 1789, the Estates General, a body representing the three social classes of France, convened. However, the assembly quickly broke down into a battle of wills, and the Third Estate, representing the common people, declared itself the National Assembly.
As the Revolution gained momentum, Louis XVI vacillated between attempts at conciliation and repression. His decision to dismiss the National Assembly and bring in foreign troops only escalated the crisis. On August 10, 1792, a mob stormed the royal palace, forcing the royal family to flee.
The Trial and Execution of Louis XVI
Louis XVI was captured and brought to trial for treason. He was found guilty and sentenced to death. On January 21, 1793, he was executed by guillotine in the Place de la Concorde. His death marked the symbolic end of the French monarchy and the beginning of a new era of republicanism in France.
